The Death Revealer, the app worth talking about
Over the last few months we have seen quite a few iPhone apps that using GPS and augmented reality try to take over the city landscape and tell stories on what happened in specific locations. AR to play games, AR to discover locations & movie scenes etc… This idea, named The Death Revealer, coming from Russia might strike you like a punch in your stomach. And that’s good. That’s its goal.
Loads of car accidents happen daily. But they come unnoticed by the vast majority as their consequences and traces are are quickly taken care of and cleaned. So Leo Burnett came up with the idea of an iPhone application that using Google Maps, Gps and augmented reality activated by QR codes enables you to discover the car accidents that happened on the streets of Moscow.
It’s a strong concept. And I like where it’s going. However I feel the ambient part of the campaign is the real trigger to people’s emotions. The iPhone application is just a great stunt for PR. Honestly, would you really download and use an app like that? But this is also interesting to analyze. In this case the iPhone application is not just a media anymore, it has become the message, the thing to talk about about. Even if just a few will dare downloading and actually using it, I say mission accomplished.
What do you think? I would love to hear your opinions.
