The mobile market per say in India is growing at a good pace adding about 400,000 subscribers a month (all india). ON this angle the SMS is very much famous within the mobile community. BUt I still have my doubts that mobile advt would surpass online advt by 2003.
This will happen but by 2004 mid year. As there are consumer adoption towards these kinds of marketing activty and also issues from the opertors front. As there are so many operator wanting to do lot of things with lot of organization on thge markketing front. Thus mobile advt to be sucessfull would need a body dealing on the backend issues towards the operators angle and also safe guards the end consumer interest relating it to PERMISSION based marketing.
Thus this mobile advertising approach will have to evolve itself and get hooked towards the growing mobile users community.

Good posting and valid points in first reply.
I think mAd (Mobile Advertising) will surprise many and in India there are several factors helping its rapid adoption - low PC population most of all. SMS based advertising is inherently more costly than equivalent e-mail based "spam" contacts, thus a targeted campaign of 10,000 hits is much more costly on SMS than a similar campaign on e-mail. Web banner ads are increasingly disappointing advertisers while mobile phone based ads still have a lot of novelty in them. Those are the main reasons why I believe India will be among the first where mAd revenues exceed fixed internet revenues (of course ALL countries will eventually arrive at this point, even the laggard USA eventually). And I am confident the 2003 prediction will hold.

Hi Rahul,
Mobile advertising is permission based advertising to mobile users via, SMS/MMS. Mobile marketing is the similar term used in India. Mobile Marketing can be done to have one-to-one interaction with the customer for the companies. Helps in Brand-Building Exercise for corporates.
