I can add a number from Italy, where Telefono Blu has estimated 100 million SMS have been sent to welcome the New Year. As Silicon reports, in Australia a lot of people complained that text messages sent by friends and family based in Europe on New Year’s Eve have taken up to five days to cover the distance.

SMS prices in Europe vary from country to country. The most expensive service is offered in The Netherlands where users are charged 0.21� per message, than comes Germany (0.19 cents). In Italy the average price is 0.15�. Scandinavian countries offer the lower rates: only 0.04� in Denmark, 0.11� in Sweden and 0.12� in Finland. In the UK each SMS costs about 0.16�, while in France 0.13� are charged. The prices of course affect the average number of messages sent per month, with Danish users leading the way with 66 SMS’. China is going to expand its censorship controls to text messages sent with mobile phones. BBC News reports today, saying that new regulations have been issued to filter messages for pornographic or fraudulent content (of course they don’t say this is a mean to target political dissidents). A lot of people will have to start paying attention to their love messages: “I love you” will still be allowed, while “I want you” might be seriously evaluated before approval…
